The seated leg extension is a lift utilized by many athletes, learn all about the seated leg extension with descriptions, pictures, and video.

Equipment:  Seated Leg Extension Machine

How to perform the exercise:  The seated leg extension is performed by setting up the seated leg extension machine in the following way: first, set up the seat so that the knee joint is resting on the edge of the seat; next, set up the leg attachment so that it rests on the front of the leg, just above the ankle joint; now, if the machine has it, adjust the leg bar so that it secures the upper leg in place. Once that athlete has positioned themselves in this manner, the athlete may perform the seated leg extension. From this starting position, extend the knee so that the leg is straight. This will require strength through the quads to fully extend the legs.

Spotting the exercise:  The spotter can assist wih the seated leg extension by pushing on the leg bar when the athlete needs assistance.

Sport specific application:  The seated leg extension is a great exercise for developing quad strength in athletes. Sport's specifically, it will increase kicking strength. This can be seen in sports such as soccer, kickboxing, and football.
