Primary muscles worked: Triceps Synergist Muscles: N/a Mechanics: Isolation Equipment: Cable tower at high setting and a V-Bar How to perform the exercise: An athlete will first grab the v-bar attachment from a high cable tower with an overhand grip. The athlete should be facing the cable tower, or if it has a back support, the athlete should have their back against the support. The athlete will then bring the weight down and keep the elbows tucked to the side of the body. The athlete should not allow the elbows to flare out or lean forward with the body. Next, the athlete will bring the arms to full extension towards the floor. After the athlete has reached extension, the athlete will bend again at the elbows until the forearm is parallel to the floor. The athlete will continue extending the arms to the floor and bringing the forearm to the parallel position for the desired number of reps. Spotting the exercise: The spotter should stand in front of the athlete and ensure the athlete does not allow their elbows to flare out from the side of the body. Also, if the athlete begins to struggle the spotter may apply downward force on the v-bar to assist the athlete with repetitions. Sport specific application: The cable tricep extension with v-bar is that develops strength and power in the triceps. The exercise requires forceful extension of the arm through the elbow. This motion can be seen in various sports but most readily in basketball with shooting and volleyball with setting. This exercise can increase power for both of these athletic maneuvers. |
