Primary muscles worked: Triceps Synergist Muscles: Forearm Mechanics: Isolation Equipment: High cable tower with hand attachment How to perform the exercise: First have the athlete in a standing position, next have the athlete grab the hand attachment with an underhand grip. The athlete should then position the elbow against the body, this will involving pull the hand attachment down, adding tension to the weight; however, this is only to set up the starting position of the lift. Once the arm and elbow are in position, the athlete should bring the arm in to full extension. This will require the athlete to utilize their tricep strength. Once full extension is reached, the athlete may bend at the elbow so that the forearm is parallel to the floor. The athlete will continue reps from this position. Spotting the exercise: This exercise can be spotted at the athlete's side. The spotter can push on the elbow to make sure it stays securely at the athlete's side. Also, if the athlete is no longer able to go through the full range of motion for the reverse tricep extension, the spotter can pull on the wrist and hand attachment so that the athlete can continue to perform repetitions. Sport specific application: The reverse tricep extension should be used as a supplementary exercise for an athlete's training program. It will allow the athlete to target different parts of the tricep that may not be fully utilized in other tricep lifts. Sports specifically the reverse tricep extension does not mimic any notable athletic movements; however, it can still be utilized as a variant in training protocol. |
