Mechanics:  Isolation

Equipment:  Cable tower set to high and a rope attachment

How to perform the exercise: To perform the standing tricep extension with the rope attachment stand with good posture in front of a cable tower positioned in the high setting. Grab the rope attachment with both hands, and bring it down so that the elbows are tucked to the side. Next, extend the arms so that they are straight. This motion will utilize the strength in the triceps to perform the repetition. Once fully extended, bend at the elbows so that forearm is parrallel to the floor. From this position, you may complete another rep.

Spotting the exercise: To spot the standing tricep extension with the rope, stand to the athletes side. When the athlete begins to struggle, grab the rope above the athletes hand and assist them through the repetition. If the athlete struggles with keeping their arms to the side, stand behind the athlete, and assist them with keeping their elbows to the side.

Sport specific application:  The standing tricep extension can be seen during dribbling in basketball.  This exercise is important for any athlete that requires strength from a flexed state to full extension of the arm.
